Why is my cost explorer empty after leaving an MSP or reseller AWS org?
Last updated: August 19, 2024
A scenario we've seen our customers deal with in the past.
"My company recently left an MSP who had us set up as part of their AWS Organization. Now our Cost Explorer is completely empty. All the Budgets and Reports we had configured are gone and now Archera cannot recommend any savings plans for us and we're being charged on-demand pricing!"
Unfortunately, that's a feature with how AWS that happens when you either link or unlink from an organization like an MSP or a reseller. It will blank out the cost and usage report that we utilize for extracting utilization data into our savings analysis.
Here's the AWS documentation that references this nuance.

Sidenote: This is one of the best features of Archera, is that we don't require you to join our AWS organization in order to leverage our cloud visibility tools or purchase cloud commitment insurance.
You keep your own organization structure intact, however, if you are joined to a reseller or an MSPs master payer account and you leave them, that will reset the CUR. AWS will take 24-48 hours to generate new usage data for us to pull into our commitment plans to provide you an updated savings analysis for moving forward with new cloud commitment insurance on your AWS workloads.
